Aylesbury town centre turned pink on Saturday 3 October, for the return of the annual Wear It Pink for Cancer Research Day. Shoppers met a range of characters from cuddly wolves to a seven-foot tall fairy, and took advantage of the many offers from local retailers.

The lower High Street played host to stalls of books, DVDs, bric-a-brac and homemade cakes, as well as the human jukebox where your favourite song could be played in the open air disco, in exchange for a donation to Cancer Research UK. Younger visitors also enjoyed face painting and balloon modelling. The event also welcomed a group of cyclists at the end of their sponsored cycle around town, which also helped to raised funds.

This year’s fundraising total of over £2,700 surpassed last year’s total by more than £1,000. Lucy Dalziel, our pink fairy on stilts, said: “This is the sixth year that I have been lucky enough to be part of this great event. People in Aylesbury are all so generous, everybody gets into the spirit – it is always a party atmosphere! A surprising number of young people dug into their pockets and put money in the buckets. How fantastic that we raised £2,727!”

Town Centre Manager Diana Fawcett said: “We are proud to have supported Cancer Research with their annual Wear It Pink Day since 2009. This year’s event was very busy with huge involvement from local shops and businesses, as well as members of the wider community, and we are delighted that so much was raised for this very worthwhile cause.”
